July 27th, 2023Sudden horse deaths investigation update

As of 20 July, 13 sudden horse deaths have been confirmed on five Victorian properties with some of the deaths occurring several weeks ago.

Locations include Mornington Peninsula, south-east Melbourne, Ballarat and Colac.

Agriculture Victoria says that the cause of these deaths is currently unknown, and an extensive investigation remains ongoing with no indication of major infectious disease to date.

No movement restrictions are in place, and events can proceed as scheduled.

Agriculture Victoria says that rapid reporting of sudden horse deaths or onset of illness is crucial to help efforts to understand what is causing them. Horse owners whose animals become suddenly ill or die are being urged to call 1800 675 888.
