Police have charged a man following an alleged theft and stabbing in Maryborough on Sunday, 21 April.

It is understood the man approached a woman in Tuaggra Street about 6.30pm.

Officers were told the man allegedly made a demand for the woman’s car before slashing her with a box cutter.

The 39-year-old woman was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A short time later the man approached a second woman in High Street about 7pm.

The 46-year-old woman attempted to deposit cash into an ATM before the man allegedly took the cash from the machine and fled the area.

The man fled the scene in a taxi, before officers located him on the Pyrenees Highway.

The 29-year-old St Albans man, with no apparent links to Maryborough, was arrested and transported to hospital for assessment under police guard.

He has been charged with aggravating carjacking with an offensive weapon, assault with intent to rob, intentionally cause injury, theft, deal with property suspected of being proceeds of crime, and weapon offences.

He has been remanded to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on 30 May.

Police believe this is an isolated incident, however local units will be conducting reassurance patrols in the area to ensure community safety.
