The state government is securing the raw materials needed to build more homes, schools and hospitals.

Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny has approved three new Strategic Extractive Resource Areas (SERAs) in:

• Lang Lang (Cardinia Shire)
• Oaklands Junction (Hume City)
• Trafalgar (Baw Baw Shire).

These areas safeguard land for future quarries – making sure builders have access to the rock and sand needed to deliver the infrastructure Victoria needs.

Extensive consultation with communities, industry and local councils helped to shape these areas. Including refinements to boundaries and stronger assessment requirements.

These planning controls are about giving certainty about where quarries should be – and where they shouldn’t.

They protect critical resources from being built over as suburbs grow.

They also help ensure homes aren’t built too close to extraction sites.

Any new quarry will still need to go through the full approvals process.

Developments like homes, schools and shops will continue to be carefully assessed near these areas.

This decision supports the government’s Extractive Resources Joint Ministerial Statement, helping secure raw materials faster.
