Welcome Week at Daylesford Lawn Tennis Club – 24 to 30 October 2020

Saturday Morning 9am for juniors (18 and under). Beginners can join in the Hot Shot program, which has fun activities to foster tennis skills. More experienced juniors can play short set competition. There will be a free BBQ, giveaways, a radar gun to measure fast (and slow) serves and it’s a great opportunity to meet other families involved in tennis. Trophy presentation will take place for last year’s participants. Racquets provided.

Saturday Afternoon 1pm for experienced tennis players who want to play round robin doubles competition. Players are graded and rotate through 4 sets. Country afternoon tea is served halfway through the afternoon. Racquets provided.

Sunday Morning 10.30am for any one at any level to come and have a social hit. Carousel doubles tennis is the name of the game and players rotate after every game, enabling a good hit and a nice chat. Racquets provided. Just turn up.

Monday Evening 6pm Open Court tennis for anyone one wanting to have a bash – beginners and those who haven’t played for yonks. It’s an hour on court rotating through activities – swinging, slamming and smiling followed by refreshments. Racquets provided. Limited numbers so bookings essential.

Tuesday Evening 6pm ‘Wear Your Whites’ social tennis. Take a step back in time or imagine you’re at Wimbledon! All welcome and prize for best ‘Whites Attire’. Period appropriate refreshments provided! Just turn up.

Wednesday for anyone that wants a quiet hit. BYO racquet and hitting partner.

Thursday evening 6pm for those who wants to play social competition. You can come on your own or in a team. Three double sets are followed by a BBQ. Registration required.

Friday afternoon 6.15pm free tennis coaching session with Daylesford’s Accredited Tennis Coach, Brian Carr. Brian will lead players through rotations giving tennis tips. Numbers are limited and bookings are required.

SWITZERLAND, by acclaimed Melbourne playwright, Joanna Murray-Smith (Flame, Honour, Bombshells, The Female of the Species, True Minds, and Three Little Words), is a two-hander, metaphysical thriller set in the secluded Swiss home of Patricia Highsmith, famous author of the Tom Ripley novels.

When meek and mild Edward Ridgeway is sent by Highsmith’s publisher to coax a new Ripley novel out of her, Patricia takes him in, in spite of her usual reservations. As the two of them begin to flesh out the new book a power struggle plays out between them.

Director Lee Cook has cast the roles of Highsmith and Ridgeway superbly. This will be The Mount Players’ Victorian Drama League entry for 2020 after bringing home the Best Production for 2019 with Twelve Angry Men.

All proceeds from the Thursday, March 5 performance will be donated to Wildlife Victoria with opportunities to donate to Wildlife Victoria at every performance.

FESTIVAL No. 23 is an “adult-focused art and music festival with the intention to leave better than you came,” organiser Matthew Bonner says.

Matthew, who has been involved in events for 30 years, said there was definitely a party element to the festival, to be held from February 7 to 9, but there was also a strong wellness component with workshops, along with interactive art and installations.

“Part of the grant was used to work with Stockroom in Kyneton so we could have a bunch of local artists bringing sculpture and light installations to the festival.”

Matthew said ticket sales had been going well and he expected between 600 and 700 people to take part in the inaugural festival to be held at Lancemore Macedon Ranges.

The festival’s website says the weekend will leave people “refreshed, not ruined”.

“Our intention is to create a middle ground between a decadent bush doof and a spiritual retreat experience so that people don’t have to pick and choose, but can enjoy both. We invite you to playfully experiment with the two extremes, for a more holistic and rewarding experience.

“Imagine indulgent sophistication dancing hand-in-hand with a carefully crafted line-up of exciting electronic music acts, art and DJs. Well-manicured hedonism with a quietly spiritual bent; and a carefully cultured appreciation of art, music, workshops and food. This is a step away from the traditional bush doof. Next level, new format.”

The website says the number 23 appears in many contexts as a number of significance.

“For us, it’s homage to the pioneering days of rave in the UK, and the incredible Spiral Tribe, leaders of the late 80s free party scene, who are still flying the flag for electronic music as a force for social change. It’s a reminder of why we partake in festivals for music, community and freedom of expression. We re-appropriate it here as a reminder of that innovative spirit and DIY ethos.”

Tickets range from $224 including free camping. Hotel rooms, already booked out, were $924 but did not include festival entry. There are also luxe glamping tents from $438 to $719.
