If you’ve been thinking about how you can ‘give back’ to the community lately, then the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre may be just what you’re after.

The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre Committee of Management is looking for someone to act as committee secretary (minutes, agendas, must be computer literate).

The local committee is also keen to secure one to two new general committee  members as well,

“Previous committee experience not necessary,” a committee spokeswoman says.

“You would be joining an important community organisation, working with like-minded people who want to  give back to the Daylesford community and have fun doing so. “

Feeling rhythmic? Then a new series of drumming classes soon to start at Daylesford may just be for you.

The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre will be hosting the new adults’ beginner drumming classes with the first in an ongoing weekly series set for Wednesday August 21.

“We are going to explore the sound and the rhythm of the drum; the focus of the class is to enjoy playing drums together while learning drumming technique,” organisers say.

“These classes are weekly, and they are organized as a block of consecutive classes which allows us to develop good rhythm, flow and technique. We are going to play West African rhythms, providing a lot of fun and knowledge.”

Nimba Drumming is leading the new hour-long classes and offering the first one free of charge for those who are not yet sure if drumming is for them.

Playing drums is a fun and healthy activity, it helps develop coordination, rhythm, exercises your mind and your muscles, creating a vibration that cultivates a feeling of inner happiness.

The cost of the block of six consecutive classes is $120 and organisers say there are no worries if you don’t yet have your own drum as spare drums are available.

The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre Committee of Management needs a new treasurer.

They don’t have to be an accountant with the bookkeeping and financial reporting done by an external accounting firm.

They just need to be someone with a good head for numbers, who can read a P&L and ask relevant questions.

It’s all on Xero, a cloud-based accounting system with the current treasurer able to provide a handover.

The other committee members are financially literate and have been on the committee for a number of years so will be able to assist in the transition.

The centre is an important community organisation, with people who want to give back to the Daylesford community, and have fun.

A free workshop, produced by Justice Connect, “Preparing for your future: A conversation guide for the LGBTIQA+ community” is specifically designed to encourage older people to engage with the process of future planning.

A facilitator from Justice Connect will expertly lead people through the conversation guide, answer questions and help discuss ideas.

The workshop, on Monday, January 29 at the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre, is funded by Justice Connect, The Country LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Program – Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health and the Silver Rainbow Social Club – Castlemaine and Hepburn Shire.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health spokesperson Belinda Brain said talking about older age was not always easy.

“However planning now means that you take the steps you need so you can live the life you want as you age,” she said.

“People are invited to attend this free 2.5-hour workshop that will help them clarify what matters most to them and help them communicate their wishes and decisions to the people around them.”
