June 3, 2023 - 10:00 am to 12:00 pmSongwriting Workshop with Fred Smith
A rare chance to learn how to build songs that tell stories, drawing on the great Australian narrative song writing tradition that stretches from Lawson to Kev Carmody to Paul Kelly. Lead by Fred Smith, a master of this song form.
This songwriting workshop is for students in Year 9 upwards. Maximum of 20 participants. Bookings open now via Newstead Arts Hub.
‘Fred Smith is simply the best folk/country musician working in this country…beyond writing some of the finest songs about Australians at war, he has created a repertoire that is wry, literate, witty, powerfully emotional and insightful.’ (Bruce Elder, SMH).
Fred Smith’s songs get you laughing, thinking and feeling. Supported by Australia’s most sensitive accompanists, he consistently offers performances rich in humour and depth. His song-cycles have become important historical documents bringing to life the human complexities of the countries he has worked in: PNG, the US and most recently Afghanistan.

June 2, 2023 - 7:00 pm to 9:30 pmSparrows of Kabul: Fred Smith & Band
Fred Smith and band present Sparrows of Kabul live at Newstead Community Centre. Great songs, vivid images and some cheeky Aussie humour combine to offer a vivid account of Australia’s Afghanistan story told through the eyes of someone who was there.
Fred was there at the beginning in Uruzgan Province and returned at the end working from Kabul International Airport (KIA) on the difficult evacuation. His epitaph for the mission is ‘it was what it was’, and we are left with an admiration for the work of our soldiers and for the courage and tenacity of thousands of Afghans who braved the human logjams outside the gates of Kabul International Airport in a last-ditch dash for freedom.
‘Fred Smith is simply the best folk/country musician working in this country…beyond writing some of the finest songs about Australians at war, he has created a repertoire that is wry, literate, witty, powerfully emotional and insightful.’ (Bruce Elder, SMH).

March 16, 2023 - 7:00 pm to 9:30 pmTony McManus in Concert
Conjuring a unique but universal language from that most ubiquitous of instruments, the acoustic guitar, Tony McManus has both extended and transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music. Ranked by peers and predecessors alike alongside the guitar world’s all-time greats, his fiendishly dexterous, dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic diaspora – Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Galicia, Asturias, Cape Breton, Quebec – along with still further-ranging flavours, such as jazz and east European music. Long applauded for his uncanny ability to transpose the delicate, complex ornamentation characteristic of traditional bagpipe or fiddle tunes – even the phrasing of a Gaelic song – onto his own six strings, McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a pioneering figure in bridging the realms of Celtic music and other guitar genres.

March 17, 2023 - 10:00 am to 5:00 pmIan Stanley Golf Classic
Tee Up for Kids Foundation is looking for keen golfers from across the region to raise funds for Cafs (Child and Family Services, Ballarat). On Friday, March 17th the annual Ian Stanley Classic will take place at the Hepburn Springs Golf Club.
Ian Stanley was a champion both on and off the course. He was involved at the Hepburn Springs Golf Club for many years and, among his other achievements, was a founding director of the Tee Up for Kids Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which raises money for disadvantaged children in Victoria.
Once again, proceeds from the Ian Stanley Classic, will be directed to Cafs Thread Together program. Cafs Thread Together Hub services the Central Highlands region providing people in need with brand-new clothing and last year the event raised $12,000 to support the program.
Funds will be directed specifically to supporting young people with new clothing, allowing recipients to dress with dignity, removing another barrier to continuing their education and ensuring that each child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Last year, Cafs Thread Together opened a Mobile Wardrobe at Cafs Daylesford office on the same day as the Ian Stanley event resulting in 114 items given to 19 customers in just 2 hours with another 10 clothing packs delivered at a later date.
