Hepburn shire residents have helped divert an impressive 275 tonnes of composable material from landfill in the first three months since the shire’s new food and garden organics household bins started being collected.

Hepburn Shire township properties have placed 275 tonnes of material (in the first 12 weeks) in the bins, and it has gone on to be converted in to quality compost for use locally, the council is reporting.

During the same period of time the amount of waste to landfill this year (as compared with the same 12 weeks in April, May and June 2023) has decreased by 100 tonnes – creating less greenhouse gases.

However it seems there is still room for improvement as currently contamination levels are 1.6% (items that should not be in the bins), the council has reported in recent days.

“While this is great, we would love to see it reduced as any contaminants are removed by hand and impact on the quality of compost made,” a post on the council’s social media site observed.

“The team are finding lots of bags and nappies.”
