Free TAFE Apprenticeships To Power Victoria’s Economy

November 1st, 2026Free TAFE Apprenticeships To Power Victoria’s Economy

The state government is making apprenticeships more affordable for Victorians and helping businesses take on new apprentices.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills and Training Gabrielle Williams announced that six priority apprenticeships will be added to Victoria’s nation-leading Free TAFE program for 2027.

From next year, the state government will cover the cost of the first year of tuition fees for apprentices who start one of these apprenticeships at TAFE.

The six Free TAFE apprenticeship courses are in areas where apprentices are in high demand, including housing construction, clean energy, hairdressing and baking.

We’re making it easier for people to start apprenticeships and grow our skilled workforce.

Businesses, especially small businesses, in sectors with crucial skills shortages will benefit as this change will make it more affordable for them to take on new apprentices.

Free TAFE has removed barriers to training for 267,000 Victorians, saving them $930 million.

We’re investing in vocational education and training to ensure Victorians get the skills they need for careers in industries that are driving our economic growth.

In 2027, we’re investing $1 billion into the Skills First program to help around 130,000 Victorians access Free TAFE and subsidised training.

Subsidised training places in 490 courses and short courses, including over 80 Free TAFE courses, will be available at over 130 TAFEs, Learn Locals and registered training organisations across the state.

Free TAFE is a joint initiative between the federal government and the state government.

Each year, we review the courses we subsidise to make sure we are investing in the highest priority training with strong industry demand.

“Apprentices are vital for Victoria’s future – Free TAFE removes the cost of training fees which makes it easier for people to start apprenticeships and for businesses to take on first-year apprentices,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills and Training Gabrielle Williams said.

“Our $1 billion investment in training for 2027 is an investment in helping businesses get the skilled workers they need to thrive, which will power the growth of Victoria’s economy.”

“Free TAFE is opening doors for more Victorians to get the skills they need for rewarding careers, while helping local businesses find the apprentices they need to grow,” Member for Ivanhoe Anthony Carbines said.
