Keeping weeds out of the forest – is that possible?

October 21st, 2026Keeping weeds out of the forest – is that possible?

A diverse group of people across Hepburn Shire believes keeping weeds out of the forest, in particular holly, is possible and is acting.

Holly Task Force’s Annie Dennis said after a long campaign by many locals who love the forest – its animals, trees, wildflowers and extraordinary fungi, the community was celebrating the declaration of the Wombat–Lerderderg National Park and other regional parks.

“(But) while we celebrate, the weeds will continue to have their way. Weeds just love the very wet climate of our unique forests, that extend from Daylesford to Blackwood.

“Our townships and roads are sources of weeds. Holly is especially visible now, laden with red berries. Birds spread its seeds, helping it invade into the forest. Residents are therefore encouraged to act – small seedlings can easily be pulled out now while the ground is wet.”

Ms Dennis said at a recent meeting of the Blackwood and Barry’s Reef Landcare group, holly was identified as one of the three top priority weeds along with gorse and blackberry.

“Holly is rated a higher-risk weed than blackberry on DEECA’s advisory list of environmental weeds in Victoria. To help raise awareness of holly, a Holly Task Force has been established with representatives from Trentham, Musk, Bullarto and Blackwood.”

Ms Dennis said work was being done in Trentham by the Friends of Trentham Creeks and Reserves to remove holly along the Stoney Creek and Wombat Trail, as well as Bullarto South along Lynchs Road and Camp Road, at the head waters of the Werribee and Lerderderg Rivers.

“Melbourne Water has a grant scheme available for landholders in the Werribee and Lerderderg river catchments to tackle noxious weeds and other high-risk weeds like holly.

“Residents can help by mapping holly through the iNaturalist app. Or if you would like help to tackle holly weeds on your own land, the Holly Task Force can advise.”

Task Force members will be at the Daylesford Show on November 28 with weed identification, control advice and mapping. Link: www.blackwoodlandcare.org.au/holly-project/
