May 4th, 2020Pota-toes part of Trentham potato harvest
TRENTHAM'S 2020 Spudfest might have been cancelled but it takes more than a global pandemic to stop Trentham’s harvest of the 30 or so potato varieties which have been grown in the district since the 1860s.
And some stunning spuds are being unearthed.
The Denis and Alison Walsh family, one of the local families who have been growing Trentham potatoes since the gold rush, dubbed this nicola spud, pictured right, and below left, as “Pota-toes” when they dug it up this week.
The giant spud is destined to become gnocchi.
Trentham Spudfest was due to be held on Saturday, May 2. The annual event draws more than 3000 visitors to the town.
