Police are keen to hear from witnesses following an alleged ramming incident in the Ballarat suburb of Alfredon over the weekend.

A driver of a car that police believe to have been displaying fake registration plates, allegedly rammed a police vehicle in Alfredton in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A car, which police believe to be the same vehicle, was later found alight near Lake Burrumbeet.

Ballarat police reported that officers had approached a suspicious vehicle which was described as a Renault Koleos, in Endeavour Way Alfredton at around 4am on Saturday November 23.

It is alleged that the driver had then reversed the car into a police vehicle and had driven through a garden bed and water meter.

Around two hours and 40 minutes later, Fire Rescue Victoria had located a Renault Koleos, believed to be the same one, engulfed in flames on the northern foreshore of Lake Burrumbeet.

The flames had posed a risk of fire spreading to vegetation in the near vicinity.

Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives were seeking further information about the car and the driver.

Anyone with possible information relating to the incident was being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit an anonymous online report via the Crime Stoppers website.
