September 6th, 2022Shepherds Flat Landcare Community Planting Day
SFLG had a ‘Commemorative Event’ planting day Sunday 28th August. This event was to honour our commitment to the ‘Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee’ grant we received for 2022 and 2023. In the week leading up to Sunday we prayed that the rain would hold off, and it did! 21 of us spent 2 hours planting the 300 tube stock. Unfortunately, the Honourable Catherine King, MP was unable to join us but Deputy Mayor, Cr. Jen Bray, Hepburn Shire joined us for the unveiling of the plaque for the significant tree (Eucalyptus melliodora – Yellow Box). We all then enjoyed a festive BBQ and the cutting of the significant cake, prepared by Amber at the Hepburn General store. Landcare work at our 2 major sites is supported with funding from the Australian Govt., Hepburn Shire and the NCCMA.
And then it poured on Monday!! The Larni Barramul Yuluk / Jim Crow creek rose significantly overnight and washed out many of the plants on the lower creek bank. There is a lot of repair work to do. Fortunately all the plants on the high ground are OK and they were well watered in.
The Landline program on the ABC, Sunday 4 Sep, featured a segment describing how many Landcare work projects are being severely damaged by climate change effects. Our work on Sunday was one of them.
On the ABC news app. there is an extended article titled ‘Landcare’s projects ‘smashed’ as it tries to restore the environment’.
